Windsor woman faces 14 animal cruelty charges
A Windsor woman is facing a slew of animal cruelty charges after the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society rescued seven shih tzu-type dogs from a suspected puppy mill and took in another seven more that were abandoned.
Humane society officers charged the woman on Saturday with 14 counts of permitting distress to an animal under the Ontario SPCA Act. Each count carries a possible two years in jail or a $60,000 fine.
Seven of the rescued dogs were discovered in filthy conditions at the woman’s Bonita Avenue home last weekend while the other seven were found abandoned at other locations in Windsor and Tecumseh. All 14 remain in the care of the humane society while one dog, which was abandoned by the owner, is still missing.
The rescued dogs will be available for adoption when they have fully recovered, the humane society said.
