A dog dumped in the city’s west end by the operator of an alleged puppy mill remained unaccounted for Monday.
The Windsor-Essex County Humane Society is on the lookout for a black, shih tzu-type dog. It’s believed the male dog has long, matted fur and a condition known as cherry eye which results in a protrusion of pink tissue on the inside corner of the eye.
The dog had been dumped in the area of Matchette Road and Broadway Boulevard.
“To my knowledge, there hasn’t been a sighting,” said Melanie Coulter, the humane society’s executive director.
The humane society received a tip last week about dogs being kept in poor conditions in a home on Bonita Street. An officer visited the home the same day, but no one answered the door. Hearing dogs barking inside, the officer left a note.
Overnight, the woman who owned the dogs gathered up eight of the 15 dogs she had inside the house and dumped them outside in three separate locations in Windsor and Tecumseh.
After interviewing the woman, humane society staff believe they have recovered all but one dog.

Coulter said the dog could still be roaming free, it could have been killed by a coyote, or, perhaps someone has taken the dog in.
“It would be nice to know that he’s safe,” Coulter said.
Inside the Bonita Street home, workers found seven dogs — six adults and one puppy — in “filthy conditions.”
The dogs in the house were dirty, but in relatively better condition than the dogs that had been dumped.
One of the abandoned dogs had seven pounds of dried excrement hanging in hard clumps as big as a fist from its overgrown fur. The filthy fur weighed as much as the dog itself.
Tecumseh’s animal control officer brought in two of the dogs Friday found off South Talbot Road. Normally, strays are taken to the Lakeshore dog pound, but the officer thought an investigation was necessary, Coulter said. A similar dog had been brought in earlier in the day and, later, the humane society got calls about more.
When staff entered the Bonita Street home and found similar dogs, they suspected the strays were connected to the puppy mill.
Anyone with information is asked to call the humane society at 519-966-5751 or Crime Stoppers at 519-258-8477.

My Thoughts

This makes me so mad. This woman is obviously sick in the head. No one in their right mind would hurt animals like this. The fact that she had s many and some were more mistreated than other is mind blowing. No amount of money could make me hurt an animal. They are defenseless. They rely on people to take care of them, not abuse them. I hope she is seriously fined and punished. Her identity will get out and people will know how sick she is. I am glad most of the dogs were recovered and are in good hand.
